More women and children abused in Jaffna, observe medical authorities


Health Units say that twenty four children in the Jaffna area have been sexually abused so far this year.

District Medical Officer of the Jaffna Base Hospital S.Siva Ruben said that thirty two incidents of harassment to women have also been reported during this period.

He further stated that an increase can be seen in the number of incidents related to child abuse and
harassment to women in the Jaffna area.

In response, Minister of Child Development and Womens Affairs, Tissa Karaliyadde said that he believes embracing lifestyles that are damaging our culture might be the reason behind this situation.

He further said that an indepth study has to be carried out on the subject.

The Minister also added that a set of rules and regulations need to be enforced while the study is in
progress.
