China approves loan to construct the Matara – Kataragama Railway


The Government of China has approved a loan of 278.2 million US dollars through its Export - Import bank of China on concessional terms to finance the construction of the Matara - Beliatta Railway track.
The proposed Matara - Kataragama Railway Extension project will be built in three phases.

The Matara - Beliatta section which comes under the first phase, spans across an area of 26.75 kilo metres.

The single broad gauge rail track includes construction of structures such as culverts and bridges over
rivers.

Under the second and third phases of the Kataragama Railway Extension Project, it is expected to construct
the railway line from Beliatta to Hambantota and from Hambantota to Kataragama.
