Defence Secretary says police must carry out their duties without attracting claims of HR violations

Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa says that a police force which is capable of carrying out its duties without attracting claims of human rights violations and intimidation, should be established.

He made this statement during a function held at Ananda college, yesterday.

The event was held to mark the beginning of the "Siyapathvila" programme of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development.

The programme seeks to encourage the ongoing process of making the police force a more people-friendly one.

The event was held under the auspices of Defence Secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

"We will gradually remove the armed forces from engaging in security activities involving the public. Road blocks will gradually be removed, raids will gradually stop and emergency regulations will be lifted.’’

’’They will be confined to barracks. During times such as this, the responsibility of protecting law and order in the country will be vested with the police. Is the police force prepared to take up this challenge ? You should think about it.’’

’’You have been tasked with the responsibility of carrying out your duties without attracting claims of human rights violations and intimidation. This is a great responsibility, therefore we need to prepare a police force capable of accomplishing this task.’’

’’We all know that no matter how much good the police does, they are always criticised. This is not something new,’’ said Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa
